To mitigate the suffering of the local people, in around 12th century a king named Paddhanav excavated this pond in the middle portion of the village Baniachong for ensuring drinking water to his tenants. Legend has it that there was no water in the pond long after the excavation and then king’s wife, Queen Kamala Rani sacrificed her life by drowning herself in this vast tank. This pond is hence popularly known as kamala Ranir dighi. The narrative of the pond has been cinematized in films on TV, on the radio and the story has been performed on stages. A renowned poet, Jasimuddin penned a poem titled Rani Kamalabotir Dighi which was later included in Suchoini, an antholology of the poems. This pond is said to have been ranked as the second largest water tank in Bangladesh. In 1986, Sirajul Hossen Khan, the then minister to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, took initiative to reexcavate the pond which currently stretches over an area of 66 acres.
